Re: Statement Protifarm w.r.t. EFSA approval yellow mealworm
Ermelo, 18th of January 2021
As you may have seen and read in various media, the European Food Safety association (EFSA) has approved the first Novel Food dossier regarding insects and declared the yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, as safe and suitable for human consumption under the Novel Food guidelines. This is of course fantastic news and a major milestone for the insect industry as a whole. It underscores that insects are safe and can now quickly become the source of sustainable nutrition in everyday products.
The EFSA approval is specifically assigned to the submitter of this dossier.
Protifarm’s AdalbaPro ingredients are derived from the Alphitobius diaperinus, the Buffalo Beetle, which is a different species. This EFSA decision therefore does not apply to our ingredients, but we are confident that this first approval will boost the pending applications of other submitters in the insect industry as well as for our Alphitobius diaperinus.
Meanwhile we make use of the transitional measure, allowing us to sell our AdalbaPro ingredients in the EU (partly) and outside the EU and further develop great food applications & concepts with our partners and customers!
