Eight years ago, professor Marcel Dicke of Wageningen University predicted that products with invisible insects would become available in supermarkets that year. He also said that from 2020 on, Western consumers would even buy edible insects as a whole. This prediction partly came true, with insect burgers being introduced in Dutch supermarkets in 2014. However, after a successful start, sales dropped and the burgers disappeared from the shelves.
Now it is 2019 and insect products are more developed. They can lift on the market success of vegetarian products and the European market is about to grow.
